Increasing the Diversity of Coaches and Officials in Alberta's Sport System

The InMotion Network is leading a three-year project intended to disrupt some of the gendered, racialized, classed, and (dis)abled norms that our sport systems have inherited. Through a series of ongoing gatherings, women working in various positions and at various levels of Alberta’s sport system have reviewed relevant research, shared personal stories, and discussed collective experiences related to sexism, racism, ableism, and homo/transphobia in sport environments.

The learnings from these gatherings are being used to co-create new strategies and resources with the goal of disrupting cultural norms in ways that increase the number of diverse women in coaching positions at all levels of Alberta’s sport system.

A major piece of this project has been the development of a survey titled, Understanding Barriers and Facilitators for Women Coaches and Officials. The results of this survey provide insights into the individual and structural challenges women coaches and officials face, while also providing detailed examples of why most respondents desire significant changes.
