Killam Swim Club
Through the Killam Swim Club’s 2025 Take the Lead funding, they were able to support 3 women to get 3 different coaching certification courses as they continue to work towards their Swim Alberta coaching requirements.
The Killam Swim Club is a small but dedicated program that serves 25–35 youth swimmers each season in a rural town of 900 people. This project aimed to create long-term leadership opportunities for women while strengthening access to quality sport programming in the region.
Unlike other sports, becoming a swimming coach in Alberta requires a significant time and financial investment for proper certification through Swim Alberta. This barrier has made it increasingly difficult for the club to recruit and retain coaches, especially in a small-town setting. This season, three local women expressed interest in becoming coaches, and this funding supported the club to train, certify and register the coaches, who hopefully will continue to coach in the years to come. This project also provided the team additional coaching support to mentor our current youth swimmers into future coaching roles.
