YWCA - Power Up! Girls Multi-Sport Camp in Sturgeon County
The YWCA was excited to partner with Girls In Sport Canada once again to provide their low-cost multi-sport camp in Sturgeon County on June 15th, 2024. Girls In Sports Canada brought their inspiring and confidence-building multi-sport experience that introduced 38 girls to soccer, rugby, frisbee, and basketball. This camp helped instill confidence, competence, motivation and active participation with an emphasis of long term sport participation. The program was available for girls ages 8-17. A part of this program included their signature Power Up! Program that focused on topics that built confidence, positive social connection, leadership, teamwork and much more.
- Due to the community nature of this program, they were able to connect girls to programs at the Edmonton Garrison Fitness Centre and as well as share information about upcoming programs for summer and fall Girls In Sports Canada offers.
- They were able to connect community coaches to the girls so if they found a sport they were interested in they could register for it already knowing a coach. This way, if a girl does decide to pursue their sport they have confidence they will be accepted into a safe environment.
- This program was also located on the military base which, due to the location of the base, makes it hard for families to have access to programs - especially those living with a low income. The base was easily accessible to the surrounding community and the registration fee was only $5.00 per girl.
