Volt Hockey – Accessible Hockey Program
Volt Hockey - Accessible Hockey Program
Variety – the Children's Charity of Alberta delivered an eight-week Volt Hockey program that provided children and youth with physical disabilities the opportunity to participate in an inclusive, low-cost team sport in Calgary, Edmonton, and Grande Prairie. Using specialized electric sport chairs controlled by a joystick, participants were able to play hockey independently, regardless of their upper-body mobility.
- The program removed financial and physical barriers by providing access to specialized equipment, accessible facilities, and trained coaches in a supportive recreational environment.
- While Volt Hockey welcomes participants of all genders, InMotion Network funding helped Variety to focus on increasing opportunities for girls with disabilities. As a result, the program saw a 20% increase in female participation, helping more girls experience the confidence, friendships, teamwork, and sense of belonging that come from being part of an adaptive sport. The project learned that targeted outreach to families, schools, healthcare providers, and disability organizations was effective in increasing female participation. As Variety continues to expand into new communities, including Central Alberta, they will continue to build on these partnerships earlier to ensure even more girls and youth with disabilities are aware of the opportunities available to them.
- As the program continues to grow across Alberta, one of Variety's biggest learnings has been the importance of expanding local coaching and volunteer capacity to meet increasing demand. Recruiting and training volunteers with an understanding of adaptive sport takes time, but it is essential to maintaining a high-quality participant experience. - Building on their continued success, Variety is preparing for the launch of Volt Hockey in Red Deer in Fall 2026.
