Play-n-Train Girls in Motion

In June 2026, Scenic Acres Community Association (SACA) offered an addition to their Play-n-Train program to support beginners to develop their skills for beach volleyball. This need was identified after they noticed that some girls in the community were coming to beach volleyball with very little experience with sport and fitness in general. In order to provide additional development they worked with two women coaches to offer a supportive environment for the girls to learn new skills, make connections in the community, and have fun!

With a focus on participants who were living with a low income and newcomer families. SACA worked with their partners at the Calgary Catholic Immigrant Society and the local schools in Scenic Acres (Scenic Acres Elementary School (CBE), Monsignor Doyle Elementary School (CCSD) and Ecole du Nouveau Monde (Francophone) to link families with the program.

The program was offered at a low cost and had options for the fee to be waived it that was a barrier for the participant. There were 13 girls who signed up for the program and despite some unpredictable weather, the program was a success with the girls developing their skills, making friends and  enjoyed playing with each other each week. SACA plans to seek future funding to support coaches and continue this program in future years.
