Delton Pom Squad - BGCBIGs of Edmonton

The BGCBIGs of Edmonton offered an after school cheer and movement program for 25 girls in Grade 3-6. The program removed some of the common barriers to participation, including program fee, transportation requirements and the need for families to purchase equipment.

The program was intentionally designed to meet the needs of girls across a range of ages, abilities, and cultural backgrounds. Participants included girls in Grades 3–6 with varying levels of prior experience; many younger participants were engaging in cheer, dance, or gymnastics-based movement for the first time, while returning Grade 6 participants with multiple years in the program supported peers by modelling skills, offering encouragement, and helping normalize the learning process.

Strong peer connections were intentionally supported through the structure of each session. Activities such as partner drills, trust-based exercises, and small-group work encouraged connection through movement, cooperation, and shared goals, creating consistent opportunities for girls to socialize, meet new peers, and build relationships within the program. Strong peer connections were also reflected in the program culture cultivated by the lead coordinator. The coordinator intentionally fostered a positive and inclusive team environment grounded in collaboration and mutual respect.
